Nine states and the District of Columbia officially evaluate their judges and publish the results before voters decide whether to keep them. 42 states vote on judges in some form. This site collects those records from the official sources, one layout for every state, every fact traced to the document it came from.

What we are doing

The official evaluations

Where a state runs an official judicial performance evaluation program, we collect every report it has published, back to the first cycle, exactly as the evaluating body wrote it: the recommendation, the vote, the reasoning.

The election results

Retention and contested judicial election results from each state’s election authority, plus state supreme court election history from 1936 onward (Kritzer, State Supreme Court Election Data, Harvard Dataverse, public domain), so an evaluation can sit next to what voters actually did.
