  Retention Year: 1990 Recommendation: Retain Judicial Performance Commission’s recommendation: Should Be Retained. Judge McClean was admitted to the practice of law in Colorado in 1958. He served as a law clerk in 1958 and practiced law with a Denver firm from 1959 through 1980. His practice was heavily oriented to civil litigation at both the trial and appellate court levels. He was on the Boulder City Council as well as Mayor of Boulder. He was appointed District Court Judge in January 1981. McClean has served two three-year assignments in civil and domestic divisions, and two two-year assignments in criminal and juvenile divisions. He feels the caseload is growing but being handled with more efficiency due, in his opinion, to a tradition of cooperation among judges and effective use of part-time referees. McClean is well respected by all of the groups providing information to the Commission. He runs his courtroom in a dignified and courteous manner, and is perceived by most who appear in his courtroom to be a decent, hard-working judge. All of the groups surveyed rated Judge McClean above average. He received very high rating in treatment of all persons in his courtroom and was considered to have outstanding judicial demeanor.
