    Retention Year: 1998 Recommendation: Retain The Second Judicial District Commission on Judicial Performance recommends that Judge Edward A. Simons BE RETAINED. Judge Simons graduated from Kansas State University in 1962 and received his law degree from Washburn University in May 1965. He was admitted to the Colorado bar in October 1965. He was an assistant attorney general for approximately three years; was a Denver deputy district attorney for two years; and was in the private practice of law for one year. Prior to his appointment to the Denver district court in July 1990, Judge Simons served as a Denver county court judge for more than fourteen years, the last six of which were as the chief judge. Judge Simons currently serves in the civil division of the district court. Judge Simons has also served in the domestic relations and criminal divisions of the district court. Judge Simons seeks to improve his efficiency as a judge without compromising the reasonable expectations of attorneys and litigants. Judge Simons received high ratings in all areas surveyed, except the areas of docket management with minimal delay and willingness to hear complicated and time-consuming cases, where the ratings were slightly lower. Attorney surveys indicate that 84.3% voted for retention, 9.8% voted not to retain, and 5.9% had no opinion. Court employees voted 100% to retain. Surveyed jurors voted 100% to retain.

    Retention Year: 1992 Recommendation: Retain Judge Edward A. Simons graduated from Kansas State University in 1962 with a B.S. in mathematics, and from Washburn University Law School in 1965. He was admitted to the Bar in 1965. He spent 10 years in a variety of positions, including Deputy District Attorney, private practice, insurance adjuster, Congressional Aide, and Assistant Attorney General. Judge Simons served on the County Court bench for 15 years, six of which were as Chief Judge. He was appointed to the District Court in 1990 and spent his first year and a half in the Domestic Relations Division. He is currently assigned to the Criminal Division. Based upon information supplied to the commission and personal interviews, Judge Simons is rated highly in the areas of integrity, knowledge of the law, communication skills, courtroom and docket management, diligence, fairness, and promptness of rulings. Judge Simons arrives at work at 7:00 a.m. because of the heavy caseload in the Criminal Division. There is tremendous pressure to move the docket because of this volume and the deadlines imposed on criminal cases by statute. The 2nd Judicial District Commission on Judicial Performance recommends that Judge Edward A. Simons be retained.
