    Retention Year: 1996 Recommendation: Retain The Commission unanimously recommends that Judge Jack F. Smith BE RETAINED. Judge Jack F. Smith graduated from the University of Michigan in 1961, and the University of Michigan Law Scholl in 1965. He is married, and his wife Nancy is a retail business owner. The couple have three daughters and live in Littleton. Judge Smith has been on the bench for 15 years. In 1981 he started as a magistrate, was a County Court Judge, and became a District Court Judge in 1987. Before taking the bench he was counsel to the State Court Administrator. Judge Smith enjoys a reputation as a fair and compassionate man who takes his judicial responsibilities very seriously. He participates in training and mentoring programs for young attorneys. His evaluations were most positive and spoke well of his continuing interest in ongoing legal education. He is a faculty member of the National Institute for Trial Advocacy.

    Retention Year: 1990 Recommendation: Retain Judicial Performance Commission’s recommendation: Should Be Retained. Judge Smith was admitted to the Colorado Bar in 1966. He was employed in private practice as government counsel and as a court referee before his appointment as a judge. He was appointed a county court judge in 1984 and a district court judge in 1987. Smith is assigned to the 18th Judicial District at the Arapahoe Justice Center, where he handles domestic relations matters. The written comments from the surveys were generally favorable, characterizing him as being an excellent judge, although law enforcement officers though he managed his docket ineffectively and was not punctual. The judicial performance commission was concluded, from his interview, that Smith was experienced, caring and excellent judicial temperament.
