    Retention Year: 1996 Recommendation: Retain Based on this information, the 19th Judicial District Commission on Judicial Performance recommends that Judge West BE RETAINED. Judge William West has served as a judge in the 19th Judicial District since 1987. He was appointed chief judge in 1994. In addition to his administrative duties as chief judge, he hears all probate and mental health cases, as well as all civil cases. Evaluations of Judge West  by members of law enforcement agencies, attorneys, jurors and court personnel were reviewed by the Commission. The overwhelming majority of those surveyed praised Judge West for his impartiality, knowledge of the law, courtroom control, punctuality and clear rulings.

    Retention Year: 1990 Recommendation: Retain Judicial Performance Commission’s recommendation: Should Be Retained. Judge West was admitted to the bar in 1957 after receiving his law degree from the University of Colorado. Prior to his appointment as Weld County District Court Judge in October, 1987, he practiced law in Greeley as a private practitioner from 1958 to 1987. West also served as the city attorney for a number of municipalities in Weld County and as a municipal judge for the city of Greeley from 1959 to 1965. West is a member of the Weld County, Colorado and American bar associations and a former member of the American Arbitration Association. He has been active in a number of civic and charitable organizations. He currently hears only criminal cases. His prior assignments included criminal and domestic relations cases as well as some civil matters. The majority of all of the surveyed groups highly recommended retention for West. Respondents to the survey commented West is competent and fair minded and that as his experience has increased he has become more efficient and able. Several respondents did indicate a concern with his inability to come to a decision.
